Braced for Trenary

We think of being braced in many ways–bracing for a shock, bracing winds, knee braced. A quick stop at Shopko for a much necessary knee-brace had me preparing for a good time in Trenary. Where things might  seem a bit odd on the Last Saturday in February, when the Outhouse Races are run–I was braced against cold with clothing–Braced against pain with meds and knee support.

I was not braced against the sights and how images would pop in the wonderful sunshine and temps. This is the weather my camera loves. This is the time I like to have.

But I had to stay off snowbanks and uneven ground. I had to be careful!  But I still got awesome shots. And this town is worth visiting for its spirit, tenacity, and the ability to throw a good party.

Not So Random Thoughts on Deprivation

So I was thinking of Lent, what to sacrifice. I am not a practicing Catholic but I still take part in many of the traditions. I was raised in a very devout Catholic family. We, my cousins and I, struggled with the childhood decision of what to give up for Lent. What could you give up for a short time. What was doable. What would be difficult but allow you to be successful. What could you live with or without. It taught us a very good lesson. We learned to be strong and endure hardships. We learned that life deprived of fond things is still life. These are lessons brought into adulthood.

For Lent I am giving up 100 calorie snack packs. It isn’t much per se, but I am already depriving myself of many tings in my fitness and weight loss pursuits.

I am down to 176.2 on my scale at home.

I am working around a toe injury, a thoracic outlet injury, a sore hip, and now my right knee feels fuzzy and the knee-cap is sticky. So today and for the rest of the weekendI am being deprived of some movement. I must allow myself not to panic to breathe and relax to be much stiller than I want.

If this is my injured path–how will I succeed. What movements can add to my weight loss goal. What can I further restrict.

I was sooooo happy to be running and had taken a 14 minute mile down to the 12 minute zone. I was not using and inhaler. I won’t panic though. I believe I will heal. I believe I will still be able to run a 5k in April.

One of the fun assignments in my Uplevel Your Life Mastery Program is what I call “Mental Dress Up.”

This is a game that you can play daily. It is designed to bring intentions to life by literally embodying them in your own being.

Here’s how it works:

Take a few moments throughout your day and Be [Fill in the Blank with Desired Thing].

As you’re driving you can become a published writer. What would that feel like? When you’re at a party, try being someone that everyone wants to talk to. Be wise. Be someone who has so many clients, you can hardly get through a day without turning people down. Be someone who is certain of what she wants. What does that feel like?

Don’t get all scrunchy-faced and try to VISUALIZE – which is a very high-pressure word.

Instead feel the effortless shift in you, and BE successful. BE a fun person. BE wealthy. BE a rock star. Whatever!

My client Isabella started using this technique when she decided to “be someone who loves to run with her dog in the morning.” She was amazed at the results.

Typically after a few blocks of running, she’d start wheezing and feel awful. But when she became “someone who loved running with her dog,” she had more stamina and felt great during the run. She got better and better at this game until she actually began to love running with her dog!

One morning, she was returning from a run. Another dog and his owner were walking in her direction. Isabella’s dog, Bruno, is still healing from an abusive past and can be aggressive with other dogs. So, Isabella started to get anxious, clinging to Bruno’s leash.

Then, she remembered Mental Dress Up.

Instead of getting nervous and reacting to her dog’s bad behavior, she focused on how calm she felt and how much she loved her dog. She also played Mental Dress Up on Bruno, feeling that he was always very loving and peaceful around other dogs.
It worked! Bruno was fine. He followed her energy, and they both headed home without incident. To Isabella, this was a nice little miracle

excitement to disappointment during the process. At one point, she met with her accountant. The accountant was skeptical, issuing warnings to Isabella about the numbers and telling her the reasons why the business wouldn’t work.

During our coaching call, she shared these stories – about the triumph with her dog, and about the discouragement from her accountant. She wanted to know how to deal with her emotions after this deflating meeting.

Here’s what I told her:

I said, “Your accountant is your dog.”


It’s true!

People follow your energy. It doesn’t matter if they are mentors, accountants, lawyers, audience members, listeners, friends, or customers. People follow your energy, just like dogs. You always have a choice to step up and lead them. Just like Cesar Millan has been telling dog owners for years. And just like Bruno showed Isabella in that one situation.

I told her that the success of her business would always be up to her. I told her that every business owner, artist or entrepreneur experiences bad news, good news, depression, loss, gain and insecurity. The decision to quit, fail, or succeed is always hers.

In that moment, her accountant might have sensed her fear and found all the negative stuff he could muster up to dissuade her. He became her dog and followed her energy.

You don’t have to be a Jedi master to tap into someone’s emotional state of being. You just have to be human. Had Isabella been feeling confident, most likely the accountant would have presented his views in a different light.

Ultimately, during our coaching call, I told Isabella this:

“The Universe is your dog.”

Everything and everyone follows the energy and emotional state you bring to it. Decide that you can do something, and the Universe follows that decision. Choose to radiate love and wisdom, and the Universe follows that radiance. This is not always an easy place to go. But it almost always teaches us about our own power to create or transform any situation.

Lazy Sunday Mornings

I love lazy Sunday mornings. I betcha did not know that about me. I love being the first to wake, even though I will lie next to my Magic Man watching him breathe and hope he wakes, turns his head and smiles. But I do love waking early on Sundays when I have no destination, no plans (accept getting to work at 8pm and getting to Yoga at 4pm–but you understand, right?). I wake and let the dogs out, warning them to stay in the yard, or else! I put on a pot of coffee and lay back down next to my Magic Man watching him breathe hoping he will wake and turn his head and smile. But the dogs scratch at the door so I let them in quietly and I sit at my red laptop with a mug of coffee waiting for my Magic Man to also wake. I surf everyone’s blogs, look at flickr. Listen to the snowblowers clearing driveways. Hoping for the sound of birds–I miss birds–I long for spring. We all long for spring in February and in the Upper Peninsula it seems so far off. I think of my family. I think of my friends. I have a conversation with God. I wonder about the grandson(s) and how they are doing, and if they too are awake and having a lazy Sunday. I think of being 11 and going to church with my cousin at Shrine of the Little Flower on Woodward. I think of my grandma making soup. I remember lilacs along the fence at the house on Main Street in Clawson. I embrace my morning. I crawl once again back into bed next to my Magic Man whose hair smells of apple. I wait. Until he wakes and turns and smiles.

What Powers You?

It’s true I am fascinated by the two power plants that are part of the Marquette landscape. I think of what they bring us everyday. This is the plant out at Presque Isle. As Mike and I headed down to the shoreline for ice shots, I turned to take a quick shot of the plant.

What powers you? Fuels you?

As I diet and try to think of food not as comfort but simply as energy-in and energy-out. I think often on the concept of what powers me, concentrating on quality fuel.

In Marquette, Michigan our power comes from hyrdo-electric, and coal.  We have been killing the power on as many household items we can on departing the house. A new roof and door help keep us warm and efficient. Compact fluorescent bulbs light up our nights. I drive a car in the winter and with my new job. I used to ride my bike in good weather. Perhaps I will ge to do this again someday. Until then my car takes gasoline.

It isn’t as bad to see a photo of myself. My first action is not an overpowering urge to destroy the image. Here I am near Presque Isle taking photos of float ice built up on shore. Mike is the photographer (My Valentine). I stand here at 179.6 lbs., a pound and 4 ounces over my lowest posted weight, but where I seem to have leveled off for the last week and a half. I am wearing a size 16 jean for the first time in over two years. It is difficult still to see where I have to go (with my weight loss) but hopeful as I can see it happening. My face is aging and I make funny faces when framing a shot. I’ll have to work on a happy face while capturing images. I thank Mike for taking these images of me. Overtime I grow more comfortable with myself. It has helped motivate me, too.

My Town in Pieces, II

I am dreaming of a new project, My Town in Pieces, a project to benefit youth in my county. I am dreaming of helping kids put the pieces of their lives back together when they fall apart. At the same time the project will help fund the purchase of camera equipment, too. I am thinking of digital captures being auctioned, and proceeds being donated. Today I am dreaming and I believe that I can help at-risk youth and heal my past as well.

Over the next week I will be showing pieces of my town. I believe our landscapes define us and we derive part of our artistic eye from those influences.

Sending Out Ships

Chellie Campbell talks about sending out ships in her book, The Wealthy Spirit. Lately, I have had some ships come in. And I have sent new ships out. My favorite new affirmation is:  Ships have some into Marquette’s Lower Harbor loaded with treasures for the whole community!

Today, I was contacted by Schmap Guide’s Managing Editor,  Emma Williams who informed me I had made it into the Schmap Chicago Sixth Edition for my Lincoln Park photo of Terry and Mike walking at sunset.

Organizing your photos at Flickr in city or destination sets with proper tags and descriptions is well worth it! I also try to join groups that can result in publication. That isn’t the only benefit of course! You also get inspired by other artists and receive encouragement and feedback.

When I was published at All Things Girl that came about from my contact with Trina at Gallery 32 who has an awesome blog and Etsy-shop. I was looking at her success and found a good fit for my artwork, too!

Today I visited Shutter Sisters and signed up for their newsletter. I explored the site and was intrigued by  their Daily Click and One Word Projects so I joined the Flickr Group for Shutter Sisters.
